15 minutes of fame

Andy Warhol wasn’t always lucid, but he was rather prescient when he said “in the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes”. His prediction seems to have come true this year, just as Time magazine announced “You” as the person of the year after blogs and other forms of user generated content began to take over traditional media.

Michael Farnum

I spent some time with Michael Farnum when he stopped by to shed some light on exactly what it is security managers actually do with their time when they aren’t answering cold calls from sales people. We talked about our product philosophy and marked territory by expressing some strong opinions about NAC – everyone’s favorite topic these days. Inevitably though, the conversation turned to blogging. Michael is a prolific blogger and has not one, but two blogs, including one for Computerworld. When I asked Michael why he blogged he thought for a few moments and said “I like being famous”. It’s just that kind of unpolished honesty that makes guys like Michael more fun to read than, say, Bill Kristol of The Weekly Standard.

Michael thought I was just abrasive enough to have a blog of my own (he was more polite about it and called me “well informed”) and I promised him that I’d have one soon. Truth is, we have been planning to launch a blog for a while. I’ve long found it very appealing to be able to broadcast my personal brand of opinionated venom to the entire world and a blog seemed like a fine way to do it, I was just being lazy about it. Once Michael found out we already had a blog he wasted no time and outed us. So here we are.

What should you expect to see here? Expect to see us cover a wide variety of topics, including products we build and projects we work on. We’ll touch on anything of even remote relation to the security field and Alert Logic. Some days it will be news about threats from our research team, some days it will be nothing more latest industry gossip. On special occasions we may even degenerate into utter absurdity and spend some time on the long cat.

We may also get some drive-by appearances by our development team, a collection of some of the finest developers I have ever worked with from companies like BMC, NetIQ, Sourcefire and MySQL. Expect to see us talk about the software we develop quite a bit too. We are consumed by what we do and talk to anyone who cares to listen with unhealthy enthusiasm. Michael Farnum learned that the hard way when I locked him in a room and forced him to look at our demo.

Some words of caution. This blog is not safe for minors or those easily offended by strong opinions. Speaking of opinions. While hosted by Alert Logic, this blog is nothing more than an editorial page for our staff. Nothing we say here is the official position of the company and should not be taken as such. It’s just a bunch of guys trying to be famous.

PS. The picture is my personal rendition of the “Marilyn” series. Would Warhol really have a career in the Photoshop era?

Nice picture. Between you and Alan Shimel molding my image into the Grinch, I will have more alterations of my picture on the web than anyone on the web!

Nice writing , by the way. I like your style a lot.

Michael
