Managing security solutions is a problem

Bit9’s recent server security survey had a number of interesting findings. 12% of respondents found that the time required to manage traditional security solutions was a bigger problem than attacks themselves. Concerns about targeted malware increased since the previous survey, and confidence in their ability to detect advanced attacks is at an all-time low. Interestingly, the survey also found that many IT managers believe that their virtual servers were safer than physical servers.

Takeaway: The survey paints a picture of IT staff stretched thin, burdened by managing security solutions, and not confident in outcomes. Evaluation of security solutions needs to include a frank appraisal of the time and effort required to get the results promised by technology but not always delivered.
